Tonight, my pioneer girls are being joined by a dinosaur as we venture around the neighborhood. I've always thought that one's participation of October 31st needs to be influenced by your context. I grew up participating in the door-to-door ritual. But when I was in the Baja of Mexico on Oct. 31, 2001, it was more counter-cultural not to celebrate Hallowe'en because of the overt paganism and the syncretism of Christians. A thoughtful response needs to come from the context in which one lives.

And as a lover of Luther: "The true treasure of the church is the Holy gospel of the glory and the grace of God" (Thesis #62 of 95). May the Reformation live on. I'll have a chocolate to celebrate!

Thanks, Doug, for the info. I also believe that Hallowe'en can be fun. Just came back from a dance at my daughters' school -- definitely a lot of great energy there!

Yes, Oct. 31, 1517 -- a date all Lutheran pastors have to memorize (just kidding!). I wonder how many Twitter messages it would take today for Luther to post his 95 Theses?!

I concur with the overall sense that Doug brings to the discussion around Halloween. We do need to ensure that the party we have is in fact a "God honouring party". I think we also need to respect those Christians that might have a different view of Halloween and be cool with their point of view.

Doug:
I LOVED what your blog had to say about Halloween. We were stuck in a Non-Halloween church for years and felt like we had to "go against" the belief systems of the church in order to let our kids have fun at Halloween. It is SO refreshing to see that at Redwood we have cut ourselves loose from that thinking.

As a parent of kids who love this time of year, I'd like to pass on a word of thanks.

Hi Doug,

Great article on your blog! I just had a conversation over dinner with someone on this very topic; incidentally, I adhere to the view that you put forth.

Keep up the good work!
